• The river traffic resisted over the first five months of the year, due to the performances recorded in internal traffic on the Seine and Rhône Basins. The data all over France drop to 5,3 % in tons-kilometres.
• Even in the river transport the worst is never sure. Thanks to the dynamism of the internal traffic (+7,6 %), the river traffic of goods succeeded, over the first five months of the year, in limiting the effects of the economic crisis which rages in the upstream. " On the other hand the international traffic, more sensitive to the depression of the world trade, collapses: -11,8 % for the exports and -35,7 % for the imports ", notice Waterways of France ( VNF) on Thursday.
• In this context, the basins of "domestic" vocation have recorded a particular sustained level of activity. So, the Seine realized from January till May, 2009 the same traffic that of the 2008 (+0 %); on the Rhône river the growth even reached +9%.
• In front of the economic crisis which spares no sector, two subsidiaries succeed in remaining on a strong upword trend: first of all the cereal sector, which takes advantage of the mechanical effect bound to the continuation of the good current campaign (+16,0 %). Then, the sector says " miscellaneous " (+18,8 %), boosted in particular by the containers traffic revival on the Rhône and Seine river. Also the oil products succeeded in maintaining a +2,6 % growth rate in t-km, in spite of a the volumes fall (-3,4 % in tons).
• On the other hand, notes VNF, the products which are more directly in the industrial flow are badly touched by the recession. So, the sector of the metallurgical products (-38,7 %), a victim of the fall of the automobile production, is symbolic for the sectors weakened by the crisis. This one gets at the same time the upstream sector like the minerals and the metal industry waste (-34,1 %) and the downstream sector, the metallurgical products (-42,0 %).
• The coals (-22,2 %) are touched, too. Besides the consequences of the crisis, this sector is a victim of the mechanical effect produced by the strong activity registered during the first two months of 2008 (supplying of the power station of Vitry-sur-Seine). The chemistry, strictly depending on the car industry situation, indicates a strong downward trend with a 35,2 % deficit in t-km. The chemists suffer not only from the industrial situation but also from the slump of the BTP(BUILDING AND CIVIL ENGINEERING WORKS), who reduces its purchases of PVC, paints, glues and varnish.
• The sector of fertilizers decline too (-48,7 % in t-km), basically because of drop of the fertilizing elements' deliveries. Finally, the recession of the raw minerals and building materials (-3,6 %), noticed by VNF, is " for the moment rather well contained, because of the good activity on the Rhone Bassin " (traffic of salt from Esquinau in particular).
